I'm sorting through items at my husband's family home. This is a uniquely shaped gourd. It was hanging on a pillar in the alcove. Gourds are considered lucky charms in Japan, symbolizing "prosperity of descendants," "good health," "warding off evil," and "bringing happiness." The tassels have discolored and deteriorated over time. I don't think there is any major damage. I think it would be a lovely gourd if the tassels were replaced. There is a coating on the gourd. I don't think it's paint or ink. It might be lacquer. It's in this condition, but if you like it, please consider purchasing it. I will ship it anonymously.
