"Tatoushi," special storage paper for kimonos. What is "Tatoushi"? Tatoushi is special wrapping paper for storing kimonos. The name varies depending on the region. From names like "tatoushi" and "tatougami," to "bunko paper," "bunkoshi," or "bunkogami"... there are many other names. (In some places, the name "tatoushi" may also refer to kaishi paper or clothing mats.) The main roles of tatoushi are ① mold prevention, ② dust and dirt prevention, and ③ wrinkle prevention. ① Mold Prevention As the name suggests, tatoushi is made of paper, so it is expected to be absorbent. Mold can be caused by humidity in drawers and closets, so it's safe to wrap your kimono in tatoushi, which absorbs moisture. ② Dust and Dirt Prevention Dust and dirt tend to accumulate little by little even when stored in drawers and closets. Wrapping your kimono in tatoushi prevents dust and dirt from directly accumulating on the kimono. ③ Wrinkle Prevention If you stack kimonos as they are, or put them in paper bags, unnecessary wrinkles tend to form.
