A Brief History of Tsugaru-nuri Tsugaru-nuri is a traditional lacquerware from the Tsugaru region, centered around Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost lacquerware production area in Japan. It dates back to the Genroku era of the Edo period, with a history of over 300 years. The unique grinding techniques were established by the lacquerers employed by the Tsugaru clan, and it developed as an industry from the early Meiji era, being called "Tsugaru-nuri." Karanuri (唐塗) is the most produced type of Tsugaru-nuri and is one of the painting techniques within the traditional craft "Tsugaru-nuri." The painting method first creates a mottled pattern with irregularities called "shikake" on the undercoat. Then, colored lacquer is applied in layers and polished, and the unique mottled pattern emerges on the polished surface. It was designated as a national traditional craft in 1975. In 2017, the technique was designated as an important intangible cultural property, and the Tsugaru-nuri Technique Preservation Society was certified as a holding organization. *Please take a look at my other listings as well.
