This is a standing statue of Bishamonten, hand-carved from Kiso Hinoki cypress by a Japanese Buddhist sculptor. Bishamonten, widely revered throughout Asia, is a war god also known as "Tamonten," and is one of the Four Heavenly Kings. In Japan, he is also counted among the Seven Lucky Gods. He is a very familiar Buddha, starting with the fact that the warlord Kenshin Uesugi enshrined him, and the letter "Bi" (from Bishamonten) is marked on the Self-Defense Forces' armored vehicles.
