Tamaki, at an altitude of 1,076m, at the southern end of the Omine mountain range, and is said to have been visited by Emperor Jimmu on his eastern expedition. Its founding dates back to 37 BC, during the reign of Emperor Sujin, the 10th emperor, when Hayatama no Kami was enshrined to protect the royal castle from fire and to ward off evil spirits. Since ancient times, it has been one of the training grounds for the Kumano and Omine Shugen, from Kumano to Yoshino. During the Heian period, it became a syncretic Shinto-Buddhist site, known as Tamaki Sanjo Gongen or the inner sanctuary of the Kumano Sanzan, and flourished as a sacred place. During the Edo period, the Bettō-ji Takamuro-in was established. Afterwards, in the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the fourth year of Keio, the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism was abolished, and it became Tamaki Sanjo Okami, and then Tamaki Shrine, as it is today. In July 2004, it was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."
