This is the Royal Copenhagen 1997 Year Plate, "Roskilde Cathedral." The history of the city of Roskilde is ancient, dating back to the Viking era, and at one point in the Middle Ages, it was the political center of Denmark. Roskilde Cathedral, the city's symbol, is a grand temple combining Romanesque and Gothic styles, founded around 1179. It is the burial place of Danish royalty and is registered as a World Heritage site. The 1997 Year Plate, marking the 90th edition, depicts a heartwarming scene of a parent and child choosing a Christmas tree in front of the cathedral. Since the first Year Plate in 1908, "Madonna and Child," the plates have been hand-painted one by one by skilled painters for over 100 years, without interruption even during wartime. They are produced using the underglaze technique, which beautifully expresses the nuances of cobalt blue.
