The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter Once upon a time, there lived an old man called the Bamboo Cutter. He lived in the mountains and fields, gathering bamboo for various uses. He was known as Sanuki no Miyatsuko. Among the bamboo stalks, there was one that shone at its base. He found this strange and went to look closer. Inside the shining bamboo stalk, he saw a small person, about three inches tall, sitting there, looking incredibly beautiful. The old man said, "You must be someone destined to be my child, since you are here in the bamboo I see every morning and evening." He took her in his hands and brought her home. He entrusted her to his wife, the old woman, to raise. Looking closer, he saw that the inside of the bamboo stalk was glowing, and there was a person about three inches (approximately 9 centimeters) tall sitting there, looking very lovely. The old man said, "It seems you are someone who is meant to be my child, since you are here." He took her home and entrusted her to his wife, the old woman, to raise.
