This is a G-pipe (quena) from Quena Kobo Pino in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture. The material is Peruvian bamboo, with the outer skin removed. This bamboo has a lot of fibers, resulting in a soft sound without harsh high notes. Pino has been making quenas for 30 years and recently has been receiving requests from professional quena players such as Mr. Irichimontecinos and Daisuke Watanabe of MAYA. A feature of Pino quenas is a process of burning the inside of the bamboo, which no other Japanese quena maker has mastered, to prevent insect damage and pitch changes over time. This process was taught at a quena workshop in Peru.
