This is a "sha" (sheer) summer kimono, a formal silk visiting kimono with basting threads still attached. A "sha" summer kimono, which is more transparent than "ro" (a type of gauze), is useful for weddings, parties, theater visits, dinners, outdoor chapel weddings, and outdoor parties in the height of summer, and for important summer occasions. Although there is some dulling of the gold foil in places due to storage, this is a brand new item with basting threads still attached, having been worn once for photography.
