Initially, successive imperial princesses, as Saio (high priestesses), observed the Karasuzumo, but even after the Saoin system was discontinued, the sumo ritual continued, with the Saio-dai, who replaced the Saio, observing from the Misyodai (a type of curtained platform). In the past, when Emperor Jimmu was lost in the deep and rugged mountain pass when invading Yamato from Kumano, Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto, the grandfather of Kamo Wake-Ikazuchi no Okami, the enshrined deity of Kamigamo Shrine, transformed into a three-legged Yatagarasu (mythical crow) and led the way. Due to his merit in safely entering Yamato, he was granted the northern part of Yamashiro Province.
