Izumo-yaki Rakuzan-yaki, made by the 11th generation Kugen Nagaoka, set of 5 individual plates, with a shared box. There are signs of what appears to be flaking, but this is from the firing process and not a flaw. There are cracks, but there is little sign of use, and it appears to be almost unused. Diameter 12cm, height 1.8cm 11th generation Kugen Nagaoka Born in 1929 (Showa 4) The 11th generation Kugen Nagaoka was born in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, as the eldest son of the 10th generation Kukyo Nagaoka. In 1960 (Showa 35), he studied under the 11th generation Takakoraizaemon Saka. In 1965 (Showa 40), he succeeded to the name of the 11th generation Jiemon Nagaoka. In 1987 (Showa 62), he became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association. In 2000 (Heisei 12), he was certified as an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture. He adhered to traditional techniques and developed his pottery mainly with Iroha tea bowls. He received guidance from his grandfather, the 9th generation Kumi, and his father, the 10th generation Kukyo, and mastered the techniques of Rakuzan-yaki. In 1960, his grandfather, Kumi, and the following year, his father, Kukyo, passed away in succession, so he succeeded to the 7th generation Jiemon and the 11th generation of Rakuzan-yaki in the same year, and continues to this day. His works are most skilled in inlaid Mishima-style and Iroha-style, and he develops tea pottery, especially leaving excellent works in tea bowls, mizusashi (water jars), and tea containers.
