[History of Tsugaru-nuri] Over 300 years ago, the 4th lord of Tsugaru, Lord Nobumasa, aimed to promote the lacquerware industry and achieved self-sufficiency in lacquer by planting and cultivating lacquer trees. He also summoned Ikeda Genbei, a lacquer craftsman from Wakasa, and ordered him to research techniques. As a result of research by Genbei and his son Gentaro over two generations, they created the current Tsugaru-nuri, called "Karato" (Chinese lacquer). The motivation for this creation came from the discovery of various cloud-like patterns of red, blue, yellow, and green on the surface of a lacquer tray that was being cleaned with a whetstone.
