The importance of dredging work is increasing because sand accumulated in rivers, dams, and ports worsens flood damage. However, dredging work is not being carried out sufficiently due to various constraints. Komatsu is developing an "Underwater Construction Robot" to meet the needs of safely and efficiently dredging a wide area regardless of environmental constraints such as terrain and weather. The underwater construction robot has long, wide wetland-spec tracks to handle work in soft ground, and aims for a maximum water depth of 50m. Of course, environmental considerations are also taken into account, such as using a battery-powered engine. In addition to dredging work in rivers, dams, and ports, it is possible to handle various underwater construction by attaching attachments to the rear of the machine according to the work. For example, it can contribute to blue carbon ecosystems such as plowing tidal flats and creating new seaweed beds.
