Karajan's 60s set offered romantic performances, while his 70s set showcased stylish, magnificent sound. In this third set, recorded in his final years, the interpretation is more natural, while the sound tends to be more weighty, characteristic of a large orchestra. The recording was done in sessions over two years (No. 1: January 1987, No. 2: June 1986, Nos. 3 & 4: October 1988), with the venue being the Philharmonie and the recording team being the trio of Günter Breest, Michel Glotz, and Günter Hermanns. In the complete set released in 2003, due to time constraints, Symphonies Nos. 1-3 used the 80s recordings, while No. 4 used the faster 70s recording. However, thanks to technological advancements, this set is able to include all four symphonies from the 80s recordings on two discs (Disc 2's total time is 82 minutes and 19 seconds). Performed 1-3 years before his death, the performance has a unique flavor that evokes a sense of detachment. In terms of depth and richness, it surpasses any previous performance by Karajan. It may be said that this was the supreme and purest state that Karajan finally reached in his final years. In terms of tempo, expression, and nuance, there is no artificiality whatsoever, and the music feels like the ever-changing aspects of nature. This is rare not only among the vast recordings of this piece but also among classical orchestral recordings in general. It is also a superb recording by G. Hermanns.
