The model for the Ancient Koma is Minamoto no Yoshitsune's beloved horse. In 1180 (Jisho 4), when Yoshitsune learned of his brother Yoritomo's uprising to pursue the Taira clan, he departed from Hiraizumi for Kamakura. Fujiwara no Hidehira presented him with his treasured horse "Usumi" as a farewell gift. Usumi played a major role in the Battle of Ichinotani, performing the daring "Hiyodorigoe no Sakotoshi" (a steep descent). Along with Yoshitsune, who gained fame for his surprise attack tactics, the horse Usumi was also called "Tayu-guro." This folk toy is unique to this region, which has long been famous as a producer of fine horses.
