Daikaku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Daikaku-ji branch of the Shingon sect, located in Saga-Oosawa-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City. The principal image is the Five Great Myo-o, with Fudo Myo-o at the center. The founder is Imperial Prince Kojo. In 876 (the 18th year of the Jogan era), Emperor Saga's detached palace, Saga-in, was converted into a temple. It is a Monzeki temple where successive emperors and members of the Imperial family served as chief priests, and is known as Saga Gosho (Saga Imperial Palace). This offering is a set of two items: a Goshuin (temple stamp) and a history document. It is said that Emperor Saga, the founder of Daikaku-ji Temple, prayed for the eradication of epidemics at the recommendation of Kobo Daishi. He transcribed and purified the Heart Sutra with the sincerity of one character and three bows. Kobo Daishi prayed to the Five Great Myo-o at Gokaku-in, the Buddhist hall of Saga-in, and it is said that the epidemic was immediately cured.
