This item was given to me as a gift and has been stored at home. I have used it once, replacing the ballpoint pen refill. When you press the top of the clip, it clicks, and the tip of the clip catches, stopping the ballpoint pen tip from extending. It seems best to press the top of the clip while angling it outwards (as shown in the 7th photo, exaggerating the mechanism). The ballpoint pen refill does not have a box. The ink is smudged. You can use it immediately if you replace the ballpoint pen refill.
