Takaoka Copperware began in 1611 when Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga domain, invited casters and established a foundry as an industrial policy to promote the prosperity of the castle town during the construction of Takaoka Castle.
It developed by producing Kara-kane castings, mainly by carving castings such as vases and Buddhist altar fittings, and gained worldwide fame at the Paris World Exposition in the Meiji era.
Takaoka Copperware was first designated as a "National Traditional Craft Product" in 1975, and received a designation as a production area for specific industries in 1979, and was registered as a "Regional Collective Trademark" in 2007.
