Honen was his bo-go (monk's name), his imina (personal name) was Genku, his childhood name was Seishimaru, and he was also known as Kurodani Shonin and Yoshimizu Shonin. He died on January 25, 1212 (Kenryaku 2), at Otani Zenbo. He was 80 years old (78 years old by the traditional Japanese count). On January 23, just before his death, he wrote the testament "Ichimai Kishomon" at the request of his disciple Genchi. His mausoleum was built next to Otani Zenbo (present-day Chion-in Honen Shonin Gobyō). ◆The Genchi-system text, considered the final version, is as follows◆ "It is not the contemplation of the various wise men of Tang and our country. Nor is it the Nembutsu said by studying and understanding the meaning of the Nembutsu. Those who believe in the Nembutsu, even if they study the teachings of a lifetime, should act as if they are ignorant and uneducated, like the ignorant companions of nuns and laymen, and should not act like wise men, but should simply and single-mindedly recite the Nembutsu.
