In the castle town of Kaga, which was home to a million-koku lords, there was a dyeing method called "Kaga-zome" from ancient times. Yuzensai Miyazaki, who popularized innovative Yuzen dyeing in Kyoto, returned to Kaga in his later years and passed on his techniques, which is said to be the foundation of Kaga Yuzen. Kaga Yuzen is composed of the "Kaga Gosai" (Kaga Five Colors): crimson, indigo, ocher, green, and ancient purple. The designs are realistic and have a calm, samurai-like atmosphere, using expressions such as "bokashi" (gradation) and "mushikui" (worm-eaten effect) to create accents, without using embroidery or gold leaf. Kaga Yuzen, which features pictorial patterns, enhances the decorative effect by varying the white lines used to strengthen realism, sometimes thick and sometimes thin. Bokashi and mushikui techniques are also often used. While Kyo Yuzen has bokashi from the inside to the outside, Kaga Yuzen generally has bokashi from the outside to the inside, which is a characteristic feature. It is dyed on a soft, high-quality fabric that feels gentle against the skin. Unlike Kyo Yuzen, which uses embroidery and gold leaf, Kaga Yuzen is characterized by being finished only with dyeing.
