This is a valuable Dragonfly & Frog vase (vessel/flower vase/flower base) by Emile Gallé, a French glass artist who represents Art Nouveau. Circa 1890. The orange glass base features a gravure engraving of a frog leaping from the water to target a dragonfly, which is trying to escape into the sky. This work represents the conflict between the forces of evil, symbolized by the frog in the darkness, and the forces of good, symbolized by the dragonfly trying to fly towards the light. Green glass is welded onto the dragonfly's eyes, and yellow and red glass onto the frog's eyes using the application technique. Gallé's signature is on the bottom.
