Naoko Terai - Violin [CD] In just three years, Naoko Terai has undergone a dramatic transformation. This seemingly elegant, older-sister type, rare beauty, once she picks up her violin, attacks the music with the agility and concentration of a leopard stalking its prey, deeply and intensely. The aggressive side she possessed from her debut has been honed to an incredible degree, and moreover, her scale has expanded. Since her debut in December '98, this is already her fifth album, and this time she self-produced it. The accordion virtuoso Richard Galliano makes a special guest appearance on two tracks, "Libertango" and "Margot's Waltz." The combination of Terai and Galliano here is superb, especially in "Margot," which has a Parisian feel of sadness and passion, creating excitement comparable to the duo with Michel Portal. The sensual phrasing of the violin can easily become vulgar by overusing portamento, but in Terai's case, no matter how lyrical the song is, she doesn't get carried away and remains somewhat stern, which is very appealing.
