The protagonist is a Cambodian who is fluent in English and works as an interpreter for white journalists. The civil war begins. The Pol Pot army expands. The white people escape, but the Cambodian interpreter is unable to escape with them. He is left behind. The Cambodian interpreter is captured by the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge massacres the white people's companions and intellectuals. For the Khmer Rouge, "smart people" are feared as rebels, so they are killed. It's the same as the Nazis. "Fools" are brainwashed and not killed because they are easier to add to the Pol Pot faction. The protagonist pretends to be a fool to survive and escapes. He runs, stepping over corpses... Paul McCartney's Band on the Run and John Lennon's Imagine are used in the music. Imagine is best listened to with this movie.
