A tea ceremony work from the late Kamakura period, modeled after Tokoname ware. This is a Tokoname "Fushiki" (Unknowing) jar, characterized by its shape, which is likened to the Bodhidharma, who continued to meditate. The form is powerful, like a person squatting, with strong shoulders, and a landscape of ash covering the shoulders, creating a deep, flavorful appearance. Originally used as a reliquary, it is famous that in the Momoyama period, the great tea master Sen no Rikyu used it as a mizusashi (water container), and the name "Fushiki mizusashi" remains, including similar Nanban (Southern Barbarian) items.
