For over 50 years, Sakamoto has consistently pioneered the cutting edge of the times through diverse expressive activities. From the 90s, he developed live performances utilizing multimedia, and from the 2000s onwards, through collaboration with various artists, he actively considered and implemented attempts to three-dimensionally install sound in exhibition spaces. This exhibition, based on the exhibition concept Sakamoto left for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo before his passing, focuses on sound and time, which were long-standing interests in Sakamoto's creative activities. It will dynamically configure and present over 10 immersive and experiential sound installation works, including unreleased new works and representative works to date, in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the museum. Through these works, we will trace the trajectory of Sakamoto's pioneering and experimental creative activities and widely introduce a new side of this rare artist. "Seeing Sound, Hearing Time" by Ryuichi Sakamoto opens the eyes and ears of the audience, stirs the heart, and creates an experience different from conventional music appreciation and art appreciation. Sakamoto's artistic challenge of "installing sound in space" and the profound question of "what is time" will transcend time and space, providing us with new perspectives and continuing to open up the horizons of creation and experience.
