This is a masterpiece album featuring the collaboration of two jazz giants: the brilliant jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and the legendary John Coltrane. Both artists have left behind a vast legacy of outstanding performances and albums. This album, released in 1961, compiles recordings from 1957-58. It features two sets of performances: a quartet with Wilbur Ware (b) and Shadow Wilson (ds), and another with Coleman Hawkins (ts), Gigi Gryce (as), Ray Copeland (tp), and Art Blakey on drums. Coltrane's forward-thinking approach is particularly striking compared to Hawkins.
