Nile crocodile has fine, orderly rectangular scales. Typically, crocodile leather has scales (spots) that become smaller from the center of the belly towards the flanks. The smooth transition from the bamboo-joint-like "take-ban" (bamboo pattern) in the center to the round "maru-ban" (round pattern) is a characteristic of Nile crocodile, with a higher proportion of take-ban. The brilliance, which can be compared to a gemstone, is achieved through "glazing." By polishing with glass or agate, we can create an elegant and luxurious luster that is different from enamel. Shirasagi leather is tanned in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, a major center of the Japanese leather industry. In Himeji City, which boasts a long history and advanced technical capabilities that rival those of Europe, the home of leather, Shirasagi leather is made by tanners who specialize in tanning with a firm texture. From imported raw hides, we create a base with tightly packed fibers that are resistant to wrinkles through a combination of tannin and chrome tanning.
