This is a set of two vases of "Simple Okinawa Glass," the prototype of the delicate and colorful Ryukyu glass that is currently produced and sold in Okinawa. These vases were made and sold only in Okinawa in the 1950s (Showa 30s) before the islands were returned to Japan. At the time, glass materials and dyes were scarce, so glass artisans collected discarded beer and cola bottles from U.S. military bases, melted them down, and blew them into vases and tableware in their original colors. As a result, the colors were single-toned, such as blue, green, and light brown, and the vases were simple with no decorative patterns. Also, because the main customers were U.S. military personnel and their families, the shapes were often tall and unique, reflecting their preferences and an exotic atmosphere. These two vases were also made under such circumstances.
