Kusunoki Masashige (楠木 正成) was a military commander from the late Kamakura period to the Nanboku-chō period. His origins are subject to various theories. He claimed descent from the Tachibana clan. We offer only the goshuin (temple seal) from Kusunoki Masashige's birthplace. During the Genkō War (1331-1333), he served Emperor Go-Daigo and, in cooperation with Imperial Prince Morinaga (Ōtō no Miya), drew a large-scale shogunate army to Chihaya Castle in the Battle of Chihaya Castle, thereby inciting rebellions throughout Japan and contributing to the overthrow of the Kamakura shogunate. Furthermore, under the Kenmu Restoration, he was appointed to the Kirokusho (Record Office), the highest administrative body, and assisted the Emperor along with Ashikaga Takauji. After Takauji's rebellion in the En'gen War, he, along with Nitta Yoshisada and Kitabatake Akiie, took on a major role in the Southern Court's military, but was defeated by Takauji's forces in the Battle of Minatogawa and committed suicide. He was one of the heroes of the Kenmu Restoration. From the Meiji era onwards, he was called "Dainankō" (Great Kusunoki), and in 1880, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Shōichii (Senior First Rank). He also became the main enshrined deity of Minatogawa Shrine.
