The shirt features lush banana trees all over. Hula girls dancing beneath them are lined up at the hem, forming a magnificent horizontal pattern. The original was created by Art Vogue of California, an apparel maker founded in the late 1940s and based in San Francisco. The woven name of Aloha Kanaka (meaning "beloved people of Hawaii"), one of the company's labels, is used. The textile design of this work was created by Wolfgang Wolf, a post-impressionist painter like Paul Gauguin. Born in the border region of France and Germany, he moved to Tahiti in 1934 and created works themed on Polynesia. Later, his artworks were highly regarded, and he worked in California. He gained fame as a commercial designer from the late 1940s.
