Kai-awase are beautiful, matching pairs of pictures painted on the inside of clam shells. It is a court game that has been played since the Heian period. The shells are decorated with poems from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each) and portraits of the poets themselves.
