Shippo-yaki is a metal craft, a traditional technique, that involves applying beautiful vitreous enamel to metals like gold, silver, and copper, and firing them at high temperatures. The name Shippo-yaki is said to derive from the beauty of the seven treasures (shippo) mentioned in Buddhist scriptures, such as gold, silver, pearls, agate (menou), lapis lazuli (ruri), coral, and carnelian, which are scattered like jewels.
