The Farnese Atlas is a Hellenistic sculpture of Atlas (the Titan of Greek mythology) dating back to the 2nd century AD. It was created around 150 AD (during the Antonine dynasty) [5]. The artist is unknown. It is a Roman copy of a Greek sculpture. There are no other copies, and it is the only one in the world. The celestial sphere that Atlas supports is adorned with reliefs of constellations, the zodiac, and meridians based on Ptolemy's astronomical theory [5][6]. This celestial sphere also served as a model for the "celestial globe" made in the 16th century in the Netherlands. In 1562, Alessandro Farnese acquired it, and it became one of the "Farnese Collection" (along with the "Venus with a Beautiful Buttocks" and the "Farnese Hercules"). After being placed in the "Atlas Room" of the Farnese Palace in Rome, it was moved to Naples under the rule of the Bourbon family in 1786.
