Koa wood is durable, has a beautiful curly grain pattern, and is soft and easy to process, so it is highly valued for canoes, furniture, and building materials. It is said that the number of koa trees decreased drastically due to logging for bartering after the beginning of exchanges with Europe and the United States. Furthermore, the number has decreased even more due to livestock such as cattle brought in by humans, foreign plants, and pests, so planting is now being carried out on each island.
