An adorable antique doily, likely from Italy in the 1800s. A charming, all-handmade piece, approximately 16cm in diameter, featuring a curved cross-shaped linen fabric surrounded by elegant hand-knitted filet lace with motifs of goddesses, dogs, roses, and other flowers. Includes blue linen fabric for framing. The fine-count linen in the center features delicate open cutwork in the shapes of circles, squares, and diamonds, needle-embroidered reticella lace, and punto antico embroidery (classical embroidery, ancient stitches) using very fine linen thread, creating an exquisite decorative embroidery. The beautiful motif depicts a goddess with her hand raised, a dog happily talking to her, and flowers gently surrounding them, creating a heartwarming scene. The filet lace, hand-knitted from linen thread, creates a lovely relief that appears cool and impressive. The appealing colors are a mellow, off-white reminiscent of plaster, and a pale, slightly grayed ivory, typical of antiques. The center is smooth and has body, while the filet lace is smooth and silky. It's lightweight but not too delicate, and seems durable if handled with care. The name "Punto" (stitch) and "Antico" (ancient) comes from the practice of counting the threads of the fabric and removing threads to create drawn thread work and the foundation of Hardanger embroidery.
