This is a used white lacquer Tanabata (Star Festival) maki-e natsume (tea caddy). It is a work by Kiho Arai and comes with a matching box. The white lacquer natsume features maki-e of tanzaku (poem slips) in gold and silver, kajinoha (paper mulberry leaves) in nashiji (pear skin) lacquer, and flowing water in gold. The inside and bottom are lacquered black. There is a small scratch on the lid's joint. See image. There are no cracks or chips, but there is some cloudiness on the bottom. Please forgive any scratches. The matching box has some age-related discoloration and stains. It is a beautiful item, but please understand that it has been stored privately.
