Sekiryu Arai (born September 29, 1889, died February 16, 1984) was a Japanese Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk and also known as a calligrapher. His real name was Tōshichi Kojima. He was from Muramatsu-machi, Nakakanbara-gun, Niigata Prefecture (present-day Muramatsu, Gosen City), and his pseudonym was Mujaku. After graduating from Niigata Junior High School in 1911, he graduated from the Fourth Higher School in 1914 and the Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, Kyoto Imperial University in 1917. In 1918, he became the 45th chief priest of Undo-an Temple. In 1921, he visited the United States with his adoptive father, Sekizen Arai, the head of the Sōtō sect, and inspected various places, meeting with President Warren G. Harding. In 1953, he visited the United States again as the accompanying head of the Sōtō sect head, Rosen Takashina, and met with General Douglas MacArthur. He also held many public offices, such as a director of the Niigata Prefectural Executive Committee for the National Spiritual Mobilization and a member of the Niigata Prefectural Public Safety Commission. He passed away on February 16, 1984, at the age of 94.
