Overview A human drama directed by Henry Levin, the director of "The Jolson Story," starring two major stars, Glenn Ford and William Holden. After the Civil War, Colonel Owen Devereaux and his close friend, Captain Del Stewart, are discharged and return home... Devereaux (Glenn Ford), appointed as a judge in Colorado, appoints his close friend Del Stewart (William Holden) as sheriff. One day, the deserter Jericho Howard (James Millican) gathers miners dissatisfied with a small mining company and attacks the company's safe, killing its guard. Devereaux arrests Jericho's brother, Johnny, as a suspect in the murder and sentences him to hanging. However, Del obtains testimony that Jericho is the real culprit, and he resigns as sheriff, denouncing Devereaux's insane execution. In fact, Devereaux had also committed the irrational act of encircling and massacring rebel forces at the end of the Civil War. Devereaux declares Del an outlaw and chases him to hang him, burning down the town. And, in the burning flames, Devereaux and Del face each other.
