Yakumo-nuri As a specialty of Matsue, Yakumo-nuri is known nationwide. The founder of Yakumo-nuri was Heichi Sakata, who was born in 1843 to a palanquin painter. The lacquer artist Heichi Sakata came up with the idea after being inspired by Chinese lacquerware, and it flourished in the late Edo period. Using various colored lacquer, mother-of-pearl, gold and silver powder, he draws gorgeous patterns, polishes them flat, and then uses a unique technique of applying layers of pure natural lacquer to create products with a deep flavor. In addition to traditional wood bases such as Japanese horse chestnut and cherry, modern materials such as metal, ceramics, and synthetic resin are used, and it is known as elegant and refreshing lacquer crafts.
