I am a healthcare worker, and after learning about them, I thought they were wonderful, so I started making them. Muffs have spread in Japan, inspired by dementia care in the UK. While dementia is the most common use, they can be used in various situations to soothe restless minds, such as an alternative to mitten restraints to prevent the removal of IV lines. By putting the hand and arm into the muff's tube, it is expected to provide warmth to the hands, promoting mental calmness, relaxation of the nervous system, blood flow, circulation, muscle tension relief, and autonomic nerve recovery. Also, inside the muff, there is a "niginigi" (something to squeeze) that allows the user to move their fingers in a relaxed state, which is expected to activate the brain. There are safety rules in the making of these muffs to prevent injuries to people with dementia or the elderly with thin skin, and to prevent them from eating the decorations. Based on literature and experience, we prioritize safety, and we use acrylic yarn and cotton yarn, minimizing the amount of cotton, and focusing on ease of washing.
