This is a colored paper illustration depicting Hina Matsuri, or the Doll Festival, a traditional Japanese event wishing for the healthy growth of girls. It features a pair of standing hina dolls (tachibina). Tachibina are one of the oldest forms of hina dolls, originating from the custom of floating "hitogata" (human-shaped paper dolls) out to sea, as depicted in The Tale of Genji. Poem: "Oboro-zuki Yurumi-gachi nari Koto no Ito" (The hazy moon, the koto strings are apt to loosen) I believe this was drawn by a friend of my grandmother who loved art.
