A cornerstone of modern Japanese dictionaries, the "Genkai" compiled by Fumihiko Otsuki. Later, smaller formats such as compact and medium-sized editions became the norm, but this is a large-format edition. This is the second edition, published in 1891, 134 years ago. The first edition was in four volumes, and this second edition was a single-volume book, making it the de facto first edition as a single volume. The binding is a sturdy hardcover with cloth and leather on the spine and corners, a luxurious binding. While the cloth cover has stains, lifting, and discoloration, the leather on the spine is in very good condition, and the gold lettering of the title and other details is still beautiful. Presumably, the book was intended for repeated long-term use, as the endpapers are joined with cloth at the throat. This style makes this easily damaged area easier to open and less prone to damage. I believe that very few books use this style now due to the effort and cost involved, and I think it's probably rare, if not nonexistent, for books bound in this style in the Reiwa era. The text is printed using letterpress printing with metal type, which is now almost extinct. It uses the type of Shueisha and is a book with beautiful printing that presses well into the paper. This edition is currently very difficult to obtain, and as far as I could find, there were no copies of the same edition listed on various used bookstore websites. As an aside, a tag from a bookstore in Kanda, Tokyo, which is still in business today, is affixed to the rear endpaper. Furthermore, a sticker indicating that the price could not be negotiated is also affixed, which suggests that there was a strong trend of haggling over book prices back then, making this another valuable piece of historical material. For those who have been looking for it, please take this valuable single-volume, large-format "Genkai." Notes The main body is cloth-bound with leather on the spine and corners. An old bookstore tag is affixed to the rear endpaper (see image). I consider it valuable material, and as there is a high possibility of damaging the original paper if I forcibly remove it, I will sell it as is. There are stains, glue lifting, and discoloration on the cloth (see image). Despite this, the leather on the spine is very well preserved, and apart from a few scuffs, it can be said to be in good condition. The text paper has yellowing, pages with wrinkles, pages with small tears at the edges, and some stains on the bottom (see image). The overall condition is good, and considering the 134 years of aging, it can be said to be in the category of a beautiful item overall.
