This instrument was used by Koichiro Yamamoto, the current principal trombone player of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, when he won first place and the Grand Prize in the trombone division at the 8th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition held in November 1991. It was used during his performance of the second round qualifying piece (Albrechtsberger: Concerto). He successfully passed the second round of the competition with this instrument and advanced to the finals. The instrument is an old model YAMAHA alto trombone, YSL-8710 (with a trill key). It has a no-lacquer finish, as per Mr. Yamamoto's preference, and a "lufthansa" sticker is affixed to the body to adjust the resonance. The fabric thumb rest on the trill key has deteriorated with age and has been replaced with a commercially available substitute. Other than that, it remains unchanged from when Mr. Yamamoto used it. After the second round of the wind and percussion competition, Mr. Yamamoto expressed his desire to part with the instrument, as he wanted an alto trombone more suited for orchestral playing than solo work. I purchased it through direct negotiation. Therefore, there are no documents to prove that Mr. Yamamoto used it. The only evidence is, as shown in image 17, Mr. Yamamoto's handwritten signature (a JAL shipping label) on the case. * The name is hidden because personal information such as home address and phone number are also written on it. If you purchase it, please understand that this part will be cut off before delivery. In addition, a business card from a musical instrument store, presumably from when Mr. Yamamoto was studying in Hungary, was found in the case and is shown in image 16. Although the instrument body is old, it does not hinder performance. While preferences and suitability will naturally vary, it has the responsiveness unique to a no-lacquer finish. I find the high notes easy to play, and it has the excellent intonation that is characteristic of YAMAHA instruments. I apologize for the high price, but please consider the price setting in light of its rarity. Please also understand that it is non-refundable and cannot be returned. In addition to the instrument body, the original case (with peeling marks on the outside) and a YAMAHA 47 mouthpiece for a small bore are included.
