During the Edo period, the Saga Domain (Nabeshima family), which ruled Hizen Province Saga, established a "Goyogama" in Okawachiyama, Imari City, gathering excellent potters to create pottery to be presented to the Shogun and feudal lords. The direct kiln of that Goyogama is "Nabeshima Oniwaki." After the abolition of the domains and the establishment of prefectures in the Meiji era, it was the only kiln permitted to use the Saga Domain's design books and the family crest "Goyo (gingko leaf) crest."
