I upcycled a kimono into a hanten (a type of Japanese padded coat). The lining is cotton-padded quilting fabric, making it very warm. The collar overlaps like a traditional kimono, preserving the feel of Japanese clothing. I made it with women in mind, but it's also okay for men. If hand washing, wash quickly by pressing, use fabric softener, lightly spin dry, and hang to dry in the shade. Use a pressing cloth when ironing. I made this by deconstructing a used kimono I bought at a vintage clothing store. The lining is polyester taffeta quilt. The overlapping front closure prevents warmth from escaping. It's light and warm, so it won't make your shoulders stiff, and it's perfect for loungewear in winter. It also has a convenient pocket.
