Honorary Professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design. He had a father who was a Western-style painter, and studied art history at the University of Tokyo, but his studies were interrupted by the war. After the war, he worked at the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, his father's hometown. There, he became acquainted with Soetsu Yanagi and others who led the Mingei movement. Later, he studied under Keisuke Serizawa and began to work on katazome (stencil dyeing). In addition to stencil dyeing on fabric, he also challenged various prints and glass paintings, and was active in a wide range of genres, including the production of picture books and posters, bookbinding, and illustrations. In 1958, his katazome wallpaper won a bronze prize at the Brussels World's Fair in Belgium, and in 1990, he received the 1st "Kenji Miyazawa Award."
