A rare, large wooden box of playing card art from Belgium or France, circa 1800s-1910s. This piece features intricate geometric relief carvings, assembled from numerous wooden pieces of playing card lace, and a fully wooden lid. Upon opening the lid, the vibrant amber wood and vitamin green immediately catch the eye. The underside of the lid, the entire inner sides, and the bottom are lined with an elegant, glossy lime/kiwi green cotton-padded pincushion. It is likely that this piece was made as a sewing box or needlework box. Not only needles, but also small fabrics, lace tape, buttons, etc. can be pinned to it. The hard wooden body is layered, stacked, glued, and nailed with delicate lace-carved wooden pieces. The three-dimensional, high-low, and depth-filled geometric wood carving decorations and edging are very impressive. The top of the lid has a wavy edge and is carefully carved with a flower pattern. The continuous pyramid/convex carved wood creates an undulating decoration like building blocks or a puzzle, resembling a mountain range or hills. The pincushion on the underside of the lid is particularly convenient.
