This is an earthen bell purchased at Ryugai-ji Temple in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, and has been stored at my parents' home for a long time after purchase. It is also a charm for warding off evil and a good luck charm, and I have displayed it with care. It is said to be modeled after the Tenjinmon Sen (Celestial Figure Tile), an important cultural property entrusted to the Kyoto National Museum. The actual tile is made of clay, 39.4cm long and wide, and 6cm thick. In the center of the square surface, which outlines the rising edges, a large celestial maiden is depicted in relief. The celestial maiden is kneeling with both hands raised, holding a ryokin (a scarf-like garment) in her hands. Although she is in a kneeling position, the light curves of her flowing celestial garments give the impression of her descending from the sky.
