The weaver uses their fingernails (middle and ring fingers) that have been filed and notched like saw teeth to pick at the pattern. They use many colored weft threads according to the design, passing each color thread one by one and pulling the weft threads with their fingertips. The expression of the pattern varies depending on the weaver, even if they use the same design. For complex patterns, they may only be able to weave a few centimeters a day. The threads that form the pattern are woven one by one with the nails only where needed. Unlike machine-woven tapestry, the weft threads do not pass across the entire width (left and right), and the same pattern appears on both the front and back. (Machine-woven obi do not have the pattern on the lining.) The "Hatsuri-me" (chipped eye/hole), which is one of the characteristics of Tsume-gaki, is created at this time. The Hatsuri-me are the gaps that are created between the patterned sections. Due to the weaver's sensitivity, each thread becomes a pattern and is woven. Even if the same design is used, the exact same pattern will never be woven. Each piece has its own individuality and is created as a one-of-a-kind work.
