Directed by Tony Gatlif ("Gaspard and the Season") based on a short story from the second collection of short stories by J.M.G. Le Clézio, a representative of contemporary French literature, "Mondo, the Boy Who Had Never Seen the Sea and Other Children's Stories" (translated into Japanese, Shueisha Bunko). The production was by Michèle Ray-Gavras, the wife of film director Costa-Gavras, and the assistant director was their son, Alexandre Gavras. Cinematography by Éric Gautier, art direction by Denis Mercier, and editing by Nicole D.-V. Berckmans. Ovidiu Balan, who played the main character, is a boy who lives in a Gypsy district on the outskirts of Paris. The film also features amateur actors with no acting experience, such as real gardeners, homeless people, and the world-famous tightrope walker Philippe Petit.
